Laborers' Health and Safety

Health and Safety

The Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund of North America (LHSFNA) is a labor-management organization committed to protecting the health and safety of Laborers and their families while at the same time enhancing our partner contractors’ competitiveness.

An Array of Services Offered

LHSFNA advances these goals through an array of services delivered by its three divisions.

Occupational Safety & Health – provides technical assistance to LIUNA Locals and contractors, emphasizing early intervention to prevent job-related injury. This mission encompasses a number of activities that include:

  • Conducting job site visits
  • Developing safety programs to meet the needs of individual contractors
  • Publishing literature to keep pace with the changes to safety and health regulations
  • Educating Laborers on safe work practices.

Health Promotion – Provides educational materials and programs to address the broad range of health and wellness needs of LIUNA‘s working families, both on and off the job site. This is accomplished through a variety of administrative and hands-on procedures including:

  • Supporting health and welfare funds to control expenditures
  • Providing health screenings to Laborers and their families
  • Developing training programs on smoking cessation, drug and alcohol use, and other issues that disproportionately affect laborers
  • Arranging counseling when Laborers experience the trauma of job site injuries and fatalities.

Research – Collects and analyzes information on a variety of health and safety issues. This enables the Fund to identify and track immediate and long-term dangers to Laborers on the job and to develop interventions to address these dangers and prevent future occurrences. Aside from traditional construction safety and health issues other areas of research include

  • Hazardous waste worker tracking
  • Highway work zone safety
  • Department of Energy worker surveillance
