LIUNA Local 1309 retiree Joe Carattini started as a Laborer, became a foreman at just 25 years old, and today serves as a superintendent with Griffith Company working at the Port of Long Beach. Over decades working on projects throughout Southern California, Joe built a career that provided for his family while giving him opportunities to grow and lead in the industry. Along the way, he has seen firsthand how the work of Laborers connects our ports, roads and infrastructure to the larger supply chain that keeps goods moving throughout our region and across the country. For Joe, knowing that families — including his own — depend on the infrastructure he has helped build brings a real sense of pride to the work. Through our continuing series with the Supply Chain Federation and the Port of Long Beach, we’re sharing the stories of the Laborers who build the infrastructure that keeps Southern California moving.

SCDCL was proud to join Laborers from across the United States and Canada at the 27th LIUNA International Union Convention in Las Vegas, as our Union came together to conduct convention business, strengthen relationships and look toward the future. SCDCL Business Manager Jon P. Preciado served on the Convention’s Credentials and Audit Committee, while SCDCL leadership, members of our Organizing Department and delegates from our affiliated Locals participated throughout the Convention and represented the members we serve back home. The Convention brought together the larger LIUNA family our Locals and members are a part of — providing an opportunity to share ideas, strengthen relationships and carry the voices of our members onto the International stage.
